Lawrence H. Fontaine, 59, a lifelong Crookston resident died Wednesday, July 23rd at the United Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Larry was born in Crookston on April 11, 1927, the son of Henry and Albertine Menard Fontaine. He attended both St. Joseph's Academy and Cathedral High School. From February 14, 1945 to February 11, 1948, Larry served with the US Navy as a photographer, spending time in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations. He returned to Crookston where on January 21, 1950, he was united in marriage to Adeline Melhouse. Shortly thereafter he began to work for the Polk County Auditor's Office, serving as deputy auditor. He served Polk County as Auditor from 1978 up to present time and was due to retire at the end of this year. Mr. Fontaine was a member of the Cathedral parish, chaired the membership committee of the Minnesota County Auditor's Association, and was financial officer of the American Legion in Crookston.

Family members include his wife, Adeline; four sons, Paul of Coos Bay, Oregon, Mark of Alameda, California, Larry G. and Steven, both of Crookston; seven daughters, Cheryl Strom and Amy and Carrie all of Crookston, Lynn (Mrs. Don) Gardner of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Susan (Mrs. John) Klopstein of O Fallon, IL., Bonnie (Mrs. Mark) Sperling of Karlstad, Minnesota, and Laurie of St. Cloud, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Mercil of Denham Springs, LA, Mrs. Virgina Holman of Tillamook, Oregon, Mrs. Pauline Keohen and Mrs. Monica Boschert, both of St. Paul, Minnesota and Mrs. Claire Kustritz of South St. Paul; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.
