Harvey R. Johnson, 78, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at his home.

He was born June 16, 1925, in Pomme De Terre Township, rural Elbow Lake, the son of Tobias and Rosie (Haberer) Johnson. He grew up in rural Elbow Lake, where he was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church and attended rural school through the eighth grade. On Sept. 20, 1945, he entered the United States Army, serving as a Sergeant during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 18, 1946.

On Oct. 2, 1955, he married Carolyn Bjornson at the Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Menahga. He was employed at Kimber Awning Inc., in Fergus Falls for 40 years, owning the business since 1975 and retired from there on April 1, 1991. After retirement, he drove courtesy cars for Minnesota Motors of Fergus Falls and the County Veterans Service office.

His many achievements included: currently the Trustee of VFW Post No. 612, Commander of Fergus Falls VFW Post No. 612 from 1981 to 1982, District No. 9 VFW Hospital Chairman and Chaplain, VFW Heritage Group, VFW Color Guard, and the Citizens Advisory Committee for the City of Fergus Falls. He also received his high school diploma in May of 2003 from W.C. School, Elbow Lake, through the County Veterans Service Office. Harvey was a life member of the Fergus Falls VFW Post No. 612, Senior Citizens, and Hope Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, dominoes, discussing cars, spending winters in Texas, camping, and spending summers at Ten Mile Lake. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Wayne; daughter, Kathy Lerfald; step-mother, Clarice Anderson Johnson; and step-brothers, Shorty and Clayton Anderson.

Survivors include his wife Carolyn; two sons, Gary (Mary) Johnson of Dalton, and Brian (Amy) Johnson of Chicago, Illinois; son-in-law, Bruce Lerfald of Dalton; grandchildren, Chad (Jen) Lerfald, Seth, Max, and Joshua Johnson, and Nicholas and Noah Johnson; great-grandchildren, Kaari and Hunter Lerfald; step-great-grandson, Brock Allen; brothers, Lloyd (Donna) Johnson of Brainerd, and Richard (Marie) Johnson of Baxter; sisters, Lillian (Wilbur) Crocker of Pahrump, Nev., and Mary Ann (John) Cobb of Bogata, Texas; step-sisters, LouAnne (Gerald) Stine of Underwood, Genieve Gudding of Fergus Falls, Virginia Starin of Madison, Wis., and Lucille (Keith) Lemke of Minneapolis; and one aunt, Delite Haberer of Elbow Lake. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorials are preferred to the Hope Lutheran Church Building fund, a kidney fund, or to Lakeland Hospice.

Visitation: Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Olson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church
