Kay, whose parents were from Mississippi, was born in Brownwood, Texas, while her father was in training at Camp Bowie during World War II. She was raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Collinsville, Illinois, and lived in East St. Louis at the time of her death.
Glenda Kay, her husband James, and her daughter Belinda Kaye Votava, were killed in a tragic automobile accident on August 1, 1975, being struck by a car driving in the wrong direction on I-64 nears Albers. She was survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William R. (Geneva Stovall) Bryant of Nettleton, Mississippi. She was a member of the State Park Baptist Church.
