Henry E. Marks Dead
Was Formerly a Member of Metropolitan Police Force
Retired Policeman Henry E. Marks died last night at the Homeopathic Hospital after a brief illness. He was appointed a member of the force in January ,1867, and served until five years ago, when he was retired on a pension of $50 a month.

During the early years of his police duty he was connected with the South Washington precinct, and participated in many severe struggles. On one occasion he was attacked by a crowd of roughs in the vicinity of 1st and B streets southwest and left for dead. It was some time before he finally recovered from the effects of the assault, however, and after that he had several severe experiences in handling unruly prisoners. For several years prior to the time of his retirement he was detailed for duty at the Police Court. While doing some whitewashing at his home a bucket of the wash was overturned and blinded one of his eyes. The sight of his other eye was impaired.

The deceased was born in Maryland in 1827, and entered the United States Marine Corps when he was but a mere boy. After his discharge from the Marine Corps he worked in the Navy Yard as an expert tool dresser, and afterward conducted a grocery store in Southeast Washington. Several times during recent years he has been sick and had to be treated in the hospital. He lived with his daughter, Mrs. Prosser, at 523 7th street southeast. His body was removed to the house by Undertaker Boteler, and members of Naval Lodge, F.A.A.M., will have charge of his funeral. The interment will be in Congressional cemetery.
