Velma Loraine Lippincott was born at home on Elm Island, Hall County, Nebraska to James William Lippincott and his wife, Anna Mary (Vohland) Lippincott. About 1910 the family moved to Brown County, Nebraska where her father ranched but they relocated within a few years to just east of Lyman in Scottsbluff County where Velma attended school and grew to young womanhood. She was married on December 25, 1924 to Clarence "Skinner" Kellums but that union later ended in divorce with no children. She was then united to Kenneth Shaw on March 1, 1939.

Velma was known to her family as "Sally". She was preceded in death by an infant son. Surviving here were her husband, a daughter, Anita (Mrs. Max Shaw) and her three brothers, Harvey R. Lippincott of Mesa, Arizona, James L. Lippincott of Lyman, Nebraska and Harold "Red" Lippincott of Lyman, Nebraska; and one grandson.
