Capt. Loder was first appointed a Midshipman to the Naval Academy on July 6, 1907, from New Jersey. He completed three cruises on the USS Arkansas, USS Chicago and the USS Massachusetts. He graduated in the class of June 1911 and was commissioned an Ensign in March of 1912. He saw sea duty on the USS Reina Mercedes, the USS Nebraska, the USS Luce, USS Penquin (CO), USS Elcano (CO), the USS Chaumont, and the USS Luddow (XO). He eventually retired as a Captain on August 1, 1941 after 34 years of naval service. He was awarded the Navy Mexican Service medal-USS Nebraska and the World War I Victory medal-USS Luce with "Destroyer" clasps.
