Hattie Loomis Ritter, the second of four daughters born to David and Amanda
Hurley Loomis, was born on a farm, nine miles west of Manteno, Illinois, Sept.
5, 1867, and passed away July 3, at the Hillman Memorial Hospital in Manteno.
On Sept. 7, 1883, she was united in marriage to Davis S. Ritter, sone of another
pioneer family, by the Rev. Coffenburg at Sherburnville, Ill. To this union
three sons were born, Charles E Ritter of Chicago, Luther W. Ritter and Kitchell
Ritter of Bradley. Her husband preceded her in death on July 3, 1917, as did one
son, Luther, who died Dec 10, 1918. She leaves two sons, eight grandchildren,
one great grandchild, and two sisters, Mrs Myrtle Hedger of Chicago Heights and
Mrs Herbert Hanna of Spokane, Wash.
From 1884 to 1890 she and her husband lived on a farm one mile south of Grant
Park. While residing there, she and her husband became members of the M.E.
Church at Grant Park. This farm was the property of the Rev. Timothy Young, who
as pastor built the first M.E. church in Kankakee. This farm was a part of the
section of land settled by her grandfather, Harlow Loomis in 1845.
She and her husband moved to Bradley from Momence in 1910 and until 1931 to 1944
she and her son, Ketchel, lived in Cook and Will counties. After her return to
her home in Bradley in 1944, due to a bad heart condition and general frail
health, she remained at home most of the time.
Interment was in the family lot beside her husband at Momence. Rev. Eugene
Darling of the Bradley M.E. Church officiated. Services were held at the Hertz
Memorial Chapel Thursday, July 7.

Obituary provided by Gary Hanna to the Momence Historical Society. Momence
Progress Reporter 8 July 1949.
