Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 28 Oct 1932
"Mrs. Mary Hennigh Neff, 43, was accidentally shot and instantly killed by her husband, Cyrus H. Neff, 51, at the family home on Lisbon st. shortly before 10 o'clock last week Thursday night. The couple had visited the Farmers National Bank night depository about 9 o'clock and on return home were seated together on a davenport in the living room for a time talking over different matters, among them the numerous holdups, and listening to the radio in an adjoining nook between the living and breakfast rooms. Remarking that it was bed time, Mr. Neff went to the radio and after listening a few minutes shut it off and picked up a 16-gauge, single-barrel shotgun standing nearby and started to take it to the upstairs bedroom for protection against possible burglars.
Meantime Mrs. Neff had fallen asleep on the davenport, her head near the entrance to the radio nook. Mr. Neff spoke to her about retiring. As she made no response he touched her under the chin with the muzzle of the gun. In a twinkling the gun was discharged, the shot at such close range tearing away the upper part of her face and skull, causing instant death. It all happened so quickly that Mr. Neff said he could not at once comprehend what had transpired. When he realized how dreadful had been the result of the shot, he telephoned for Dr. C. H. Campbell, Canfield, Dr. F. F. Monroe, Youngstown, his brother-in-law, and the sheriff's office. After the arrival of the sheriff and two deputies and county coroner Dr. M. E. Hayes, the latter pronouncing it an accidental death. The remains were recovered to Williams funeral home.
Mr. Neff accompanied Sheriff Stone and Coroner Hayes to Youngstown where they and assistant prosecutor James Cooper conferred, Dr. Hayes gave a verdict of accidental death. Mr. Neff after being exonerated returned to Canfield.
The gun was one that had been used to kill hawks that preyed on a gold fish pond near the Neff home and the person who last used it had left it loaded and cocked, which Mr. Neff did not know, believing it empty and harmless. The tragedy shocked relatives of the couple, knowing them to be greatly devoted to each other, as well as people of the village and neighborhood.
Deceased was born in Punxsutawney, Pa., in 1889, graduated from Adrian nurses school and hospital and joined the American staff of army nurses, serving in all five years, at times stationed at Walter Reed hospital, Washington, and at Fitzsimmons hospital, Denver, Ohio.
She came to Canfield ten years ago with her widowed mother, Mrs. Olie M. Hennigh, and was married July 20, 1925. She was a member of the local M. E. Church, Lyoceum club of Youngstown, and Canfield American Legion Post, No. 177, and active in all.
Surviving are her mother, her husband, a brother, David Hennigh, Canfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Adda Chambers, county nurse, Canfield, and Mrs. F. F. Monroe, Youngstown.
Private funeral services at the home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock were conducted by Rev. Glenn C. Cornell assisted by Rev. L. P. McCulloch, members of Post 177 as guard of honor, heading the procession to the village cemetery where interments was made."
