Mr. Douglas Colein Storie, 77, of 125 Oliver Hill Road, Banner Elk (the Matney community) died Thursday morning, May 24, 2001, at home.

He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Matney, Watauga County, to the late Alvin Carter Storie and Victoria Matney Storie.

Mr. Storie was a retired sheet rock finisher and the owner and operator of the former Mountain Top Grocery Store. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Jimmie Storie; one grandson, Greg Storie and wife, Penny; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Yates and one great-grandson, Cole Storie, all of Matney (Banner Elk); one sister, Betty Bumgarner and husband, Homer, of Banner Elk and one brother, Homer Storie of Lenoir. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Houck Storie; a granddaughter, Julie Dawn Storie; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Morris and three brothers, Eugene Storie, Houston Storie and John Storie.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Charles McKinney. Burial followed in the Liberty Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Liberty-Matney Cemetery Fund, in care of Lavola Carender, 7156 Highway 194 South, Banner Elk, N.C. 28604.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
