He said he never was shot at but did kill one man in Tunisia when "an old Arab stepped out in front of my truck and I ran over him". He said the US Government gave the man's family $100.00 compensation for his death. Vernie's final unit of assignment was with Company B, 2759th Engineer Combat Battalion.
