YOUNG MEN DROWN
Chester A. Yeltan of Amity Drowned Sunday Morning--and IRa Hendricks of Indianapolis Met Like Death Sunday Morning.

Ira Hendricks, son of Thomas Hendricks of this city, was drowned in White River about a mile north of Broad Ripple Sunday afternoon while going to the aid of some young women who were in an unmanageable canoe. Mr. Hendricks had gone on a trip up the river on an excursion launch. The party had landed for lunch and two young ladies had gone out on the river in a canoe, and soon became frightened. Mr. Hendricks and his friend Mr. Thomas at once went to their rescue. The former young man unfortunately stood up in the frail craft upsetting it and both were thrown into the river. Mr. Thomas could swim and pushed the canoe towards Mr. Hendricks, but the latter could not hold on and sank. The body was recovered that evening and the father of the deceased went with Ara Vandivier to bring it to Franklin Monday.

The funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the First Baptist Church, Rev. P. L. Powell conducting the service. Burial at Greenlawn.

The deceased was known as a fine young man and had the respect of all who knew him. He was employed at the Central Hospital in Indianapolis.

DIES IN WHITE RIVER
Canoeist Loses His Life
Ira Hendricks Upsets Boat and Drowns Despite Friend's Effort to Save Him

Ira C. Hendricks, aged 37, employed at the Central Hospital for the Insane, was drowned last evening about 7 o'clock in White River, about two miles above Broad Ripple, near new Terrace Beach. The drowning occurred when Hendricks, with Frank Thomas, members of a party of eight young women and men friends, went in a canoe into midstream. Hendricks was inexperienced in handling a canoe, according to the story of Thomas, and in attempting to turn the boat about capsized it and both were plunged into the water. Hendricks sank despite his own desperate struggles to keep afloat as well as the equally desperate effort of his younger and much lighter companion to assist him. The entire party witnessed the tragedy.

The drowning was the sad ending of a Sunday afternoon picnic planned by Hendricks, who with Thomas, Burk Brooks, and six young women friends went to Broad Ripple yesterday about noon. After leaving the car at White City the party walked up the river to Terrace Beach, a picturesque locality frequented by picnickers.
The lunches had been eaten and toward sundown the picnickers say that they were preparing to return to the city. Two of the young women were out in a canoe, and, unaccustomed to its management, became frightened. Thomas and Hendricks took another canoe and went out to assist them to shore.

Thomas says that Hendricks seated himself in the stern of the boat and said he would steer down stream. He attempted to turn the prow of the boat, and leaned far over. The next moment, Thomas says, he found himself struggling in the water. He observed from Hendricks's actions, he says, that he could not swim and attempted to push the boat, which did not sink, toward him. Hendricks grasped wildly for it, but fell short, and Thomas says it floated from his own reach. Once, Thomas states, he felt Hendricks's grasp about his own neck as he tried to help him and had to fight to free himself. Then Hendricks sank and did not rise. His body was recovered nearly two hours later by Cass Connaway and a companion, who were spending the day in the vicinity. Dr. D. N. Bennett, deputy coroner at Broad Ripple, investigated and says the drowning was purely accidental.

The body of Hendricks was brought to Indianapolis and taken to Tutewiler morgue, on East Market Street.
Hendricks had been employed as a repair man in the engine rooms at the Insane Hospital for six years. Dr. George F. Edenbarter, superintendent of the hospital, last night made an effort to find Hendricks's relatives. He states that Hendricks had a brother at Acton and it is thought his father lives at Franklin, Ind.

A great big Thank You to Amanda Hendricks for this very interesting, but extremely sad story that was added on the 19th of October 2018. God bless the Hendricks families! Carole Whittemore #46909143

I found a Franklin obit for Ira that might be interesting. I found this at the Johnson County Museum in the Hendricks Obit files. There were two young men in the county that drowned on the same day. I'll post here the account for Ira.
