Sterling resident Gerald Bolen died Sunday, April 16. 2006, of complications from pneumonia, surrounded by his family at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. He was 87.
In honor of his wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. His cremated remains will be scattered in the Kenai River.
Mr. Bolen was born Nov. 8, 1918, to Lawrence and Lillie (Marler) Bolen in Dayton, Tenn. He graduated from Ben Davis High School in Indiana in 1937. Mr. Bolen entered into the U.S. Marines Corps in 1938 and served as a sergeant major until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He met his wife, Ruth Anna McMurtry, and they were married Nov. 15, 1941.
Mr. Bolen worked as a carpenter before relocating to Alaska in 1948. He joined the Southern Alaska Carpenters Union in 1949, where he was a lifelong member. He retired from the union in 1980. He and his wife lived in Anchorage before moving to their home on the Kenai River in 1991.
"Gerald was loved by his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time at his home on the Kenai River. He especially enjoyed making pancakes for his family and friends. We will remember his great sense of humor and his love for his family, " the family wrote.
Mr. Bolen was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Bolen; one daughter and fiance, Linda Pepper and Gary Overstad; grandson, Bill Smith; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Chuck and Kahlene Smith; granddaughter, Angela R. Summerhays; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Laura and Mark Mahoric; great-grandchildren, Angela, Billy, Jonathon and Charlie Smith, Jessica, Jeff, Steven, Chad, and Loralisa Summerhays and Matthew Gerald Mahoric; close friends and extended family, Kathy, joey and Sam Brow, the Brow family, the Tvenstrups family, Bob and Debbie Pepper, Ron Summerhays and Fern Tharp; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Jean Bolen and James and Mary Ann Bolen; sisters, Sarah Mitchell, Bobbie South and Billie Jolly; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
