Coba L. Smith, 76, of Indiana, passed away May 3, 2003. Funeral services were conducted May 6 at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home in Portland, IN, with burial in Green Park Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 10, 1926 in Boatland, TN, the son of Joel Hubert Bertram and Bonnie Hoover.

He was married May 23, 1952 to June Lanning. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, Karsh Stone Quarry and also for Horizon Mobile Home. He was a member of the United Lenape Band of Indians and had the name "Squirrel Foot." He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and won many awards for sharp shooting.

Survivors include his wife, June; son, Jonathan Smith of Portland, IN; daughter, Bonita Jacobson of Indianapolis, IN; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; brothers, Ernest Smith of Muncie, IN, Lewis Smith of Eaton, IN and Charles Fox Bertram of Jamestown, TN; sisters, Lorene Dickason of Ridgeville, IN, Ruth Bowden and Dixie Roberts, both of Jamestown, TN, Nancy Conaster of Mooresville, IN, Peggy Burton of Williamstown, NJ and Shirley Pryor of Crossville; and several nieces and nephews.
