He was born on November 07, 1918 in Waterloo, the son of Edson and Hildred "Tina" Beard. On December 30, 1948 he married Beth Bartsch.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Tidewater. He retired from the Navel Reserve in 1966 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1947 he began his law practice in Greensburg and continued to practice until his death. He has served as Prosecuting Attorney and County Attorney for Decatur County. He was a member of the American Legion, Kiwanis, Elks, The American Bar Association, and the Indiana Bar Association. He was on the founding board for the Lake Santee Property Owners Association, and was an Ordained Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensburg.
He is survived by his wife, Maryland Beard of Greensburg; sons, David Beard of Fairhope, Ala. and Joe Beard of Greensburg; daughter, Mary Ann (Eric) Green-Jeffries of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Catherine Johnson and Scott Jeffries of Albuquerque, NM and Whitney Beard and Austin Beard of Greensburg; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Johnson of Albuquerque, NM.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Hammond.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28 at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 29 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Splitt officiating. Burial will follow in the South Park Cemetery.
