James C. "Jim" Morris, Sr., 89 years of age, died Friday, January 22, 2010, of respiratory disease complications. He resided in Hapeville and Southwest Atlanta except during his Army/Air Force Service.
Mr. Morris was born January 7, 1921 in Atlanta, GA to Addie and Newton Morris. Following graduation from Russell High School, Mr. Morris was in the Army/Air Force during World War II and was an Atomic Vet who served in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was exposed to radiation from the Trinity Atomic Bomb test in New Mexico.
He was the owner of M&M Trucking/Equipment Leasing Corp. and built Bear Creek Airport in Hampton, which eventually became Clayton County Airport. Mr. Morris and his wife were lifelong members and supporters of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Mr. Morris was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings and a son, James C. Morris, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Julia Miller Morris; daughters, Sherry Braggio and her husband John, of Baltimore, Angel Edwards and her husband Max, of Jackson; grandson, Eddie Robertson and 2 great grandsons, Nick and Griffin Robertson, of College Park.
The Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 25th at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 2840 Metropolitan Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30315, with remains placed in state at 12 Noon. Reverend Roy Watkins will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Building Fund of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
