Robert Fenton (Bob) Moore, 94, died at 8:52 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana. Born April 23, 1915 in Shenandoah, VA, he was the son of the late Robert Hume Moore (1895-1960) and Charlotte Virginia Roudabush Moore (1897-1981).
During the Second World War, he served as a Gunners Mate, serving mostly in the Atlantic, but later at Pearl Harbor, where he was attending radar school when the war ended.
"Enl. U.S.N. 5/20/43. Dog Tag #8353372. Trained at Bainbridge, Md. Then to Little Creek, Va. for Gunners Mate Training. Sent to Brooklyn, N.Y. and crew member aboard S.S. Robert Newell. In convoy from Norfolk (262 ships) with destroyer and British escorts through Straits of Gibraltar to Mediterranean Sea. Entered dangerous waters 4/20/44. Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf. Carried Ammunition to Russians. Was in the Red Sea on D-Day 6/6/44."
"First trip over we went to Iran and unloaded a load of dynamite destination under lend lease for the Russians to defeat Hitler. Our convoy came under attack and lost one ship. Two others put out of commission. On second trip still aboard SS Robert Newell were loaded with rations for the army convoy gathered near Norfolk, Va., went through South Atlantic through Straits of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean no action this trip thankfully a small port named Mustagna (?) layed there for three weeks, left there crossed out and headed (?) the coast of France, Toulon on important port to France. We could see in a distance also more of ships that had been scuttled in the harbor so the germans could not make use of them this was the loss of French Navy, then we hit Marseilles where rations were unloaded for the army this was the Invasion of Southern France by the Allies, back to the stables on leave then sent to Norfolk, Va. by the time the war in Germany was over boarded SS Mendisona a troop ship went through the Panama Canal then to Oahu, Hawaii put in for shore duty was in transportation at the Fleet Training Center a radar school for eleven months until the war with Japan ended boarded a light aircraft carrier on way to States hit San Francisco went on Liberty there to Oakland, Ca., left Frisco by train to Norfolk, Va. and given my discharge Nov. 20, 1945 - 835-33-72."
While in Virginia he operated a taxi cab business, served as a policeman in the town of Shenandoah, and owned a coal delivery business and a restaurant/bar. Moving later to Pennsylvania and eventually settling in Lafayette, Indiana in 1954 with his second wife, Francis, he worked for New Century Homes until his retirement in 1977. A sister, Helen Virginia Moore Kaufman, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Francis Morris Moore (also of Shenandoah), of 56 years; a son, Robert Hume Moore, Sr. of Shenandoah, VA; four daughters, Sandra Miller of Baker, WV, Susan Hadley of Lafayette, Janet Moore of Lafayette, and Anna Shaffer of Valley View, TX; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
