Bernard D. Theilken was born August 4, 1873 in Westerstede, Ammerland, Germany the son of Gerd Theilken (1837-1914) and Gebke Margareta (Wilken) Theilken (1835-1909). They had 3 sons: Gerhart (1867-1958), Bernard Diedrich (1873-1953) and Friedrich Wilhelm (1876-1949).
He married Effie May Smith on May 29, 1895 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. They had 8 children: Ella Irene, Lenora Marie, Gradel Martha, Emma Lee, Bernard William, Effie Marie, Charles Edward and Dorothy Belle.
Ben served as a Police foot patrolman, Police Magistrate and later Justice of the Peace in Springfield. After the death of his wife, Effie May (Smith) Theilken he moved his family to Los Angeles, California. Ben passed away February 26, 1953 in Los Angeles and is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery, Los Angeles County, California.
