John CZUDEK was the fourth of eight children born to Jan CZUDEK and Anna RABINOVA in house number 12 of Hradku, Silesia, Austria (today this town is within the Czech Republic and is located south of Cesky Tesin). He was baptized in the Evangelical Church of Navsi on 8-Jun-1889.

Immigration records show John entered the USA from Canada in Nov 1908 at Port Marcus, WA. He worked in logging camps in Washington state (and possibly Canada). Whether this was his first entry into the USA is not known.

The 1910 US Census (13-May-1910) shows John Czudek living in Satsop Village, Chehalis County, WA, age 20, single, working in a logging camp cookhouse as a "flunky." [While today the common use of this word sounds derogatory, the dictionary definition is 'one who does menial or trivial work' and would indicate a 'helper' or 'day laborer'.] He listed his father as Austrian/Polish and mother as Austrian/German.

John's WWI draft registration card (dated 1917) shows he was single, living at 669 Yesler Way, Seattle, WA and working as a waiter at the Peoples Cafe on 2nd and Washington. A Pierce County, WA marriage record lists John Czudek and Margaret Bangs married on 31-Dec-1917. Her full name was Estella Margarette, daughter of Marshall D and Sarah Anna Bangs. Some documents refer to her as "Anna" as well.

John and Anna traveled with the Al G Barnes Wild Animal Circus throughout the USA and parts of Canada. He played violin and accordion, and she was promoted as the "Petite Estelle" in that venue. You will see a photograph of her posted on her Find-A-Grave memorial page.

Oral family history says a daughter, Viola Anna CZUDEK (1917-2002) was adopted by John and Anna. The 1930 US Census confirms this information. Her birth surname and adoption circumstances are not known.

UPDATE on 15 Mar 1997: Betty Gene Czudek LEWIS (step-sister of Viola) has the original US Marine Corps Enlistment Notification for Viola Anna CZUDEK dated 19 April 1944 received by her father John CZUDEK Sr. Miss Viola worked in an airplane factory during her military service. Also, a newspaper article describes an ex-Marine woman's work project in which Viola participated at the El Cajun Memorial Building, TX on 21 Feb 1949.

John CZUDEK Sr. received his Naturalization papers on 29 Apr 1929 in Seattle, WA. The 1930 census shows him living in King County, WA, USA. An unsourced family tree on Ancestry shows a marriage on 11-Feb-1933. This contradicts the 1917 marriage record in Washington state, posted on the Estella "Anna" memorial. She would die in 1939 due to medical complications of a weight reduction program. Her death location has not been discovered although it is rumored it might be in either the state of Utah or Washington.

[UPDATE 2010: Estella's resting place has been identified as the Highland Cemetery in Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming, USA.]

Sometime before 1946 John CZUDEK married Dorothy BATES. This couple had two children; John Jr (b. 1946) and Betty Gene (b. 1948), while this couple resided in Orange, TX, USA.

Spouse 2: Dorothy BATES
b. 15-Mar-1926 - Trafalgar, AR, USA
d. 18-Oct-2005 - Baytown, TX, USA

Dorothy Bates' parents were Walter Marion and Laura (Ellingburg) BATES. About 1952 Dorothy married Robert FINLEY. It appears she had a third husband, Clinton ROBERTS, but I do not have dates to put this marriage into proper chronological order.
