Gertrude Ann Price was born on June 14, 1808 in Brooklyn, New York to unknown parents of Dutch descent. She was first married to Thomas Burlock and had two sons by him while yet in New York State- William H. Burlock and Samuel J. Burlock. After Thomas Burlock enlisted with Company E., 1st New York Infantry the family moved to Fort Snelling in Minnesota, where they remained from 1829 to 1834. Their third child, Helen Burlock, was born at Fort Snelling in 1832. Shortly after that, the family relocated to Fort Crawford in Crawford County, Wisconsin. It was there that Gertrude's first husband died in 1835.

On Jul 17, 1837, she married Jacob Lemons at Prairie duChien, Crawford County, Wisconsin. The couple went on to have a total of nine more children as follows: Rebecca Lemons Ward; Jacob Jr.; Susan A. Lemons Coyle; Joseph E.; David; Caroline E. "Carrie" Lemons Noble; Theodore; Walter and Moses.

After Joseph Lemons death in 1872, Gertrude moved west to live with her daughter, Susan Lemons Coyle and family. It was while residing with them at Alden, Freeborn County, Minnesota that she died on December 14, 1882.

Inscription

We now know that there IS a marker on this grave. Many years ago it was mistakenly transcribed as "G.A. Lembke." However, based on family Bible entries and Civil War Pension documents, as well as perfectly matched dates of birth and death and the corresponding location of death, there was little doubt that this was is indeed the final resting place of Gertrude A. Price Lemons. A special thank you to "DreamLady" for taking the photographs that confirmed Gertrude Lemons' burial location!
