Helen Burlock was the daughter of Thomas and Gertrude Ann Price Burlock- the youngest of their three children. She was born on February 7, 1832 while her father was serving in the US Army and stationed at Fort Snelling in Minnesota Territory. The family would later move to Fort Crawford at Prairie duChein, Crawford County, Wisconsin. Not long after their move to Wisconsin, Helen's father would die and her mother would remarry. Her mother and step-father, Jacob Lemons, had ten additional children- all step brothers and sisters to Helen and her brothers.

On Christmas Day, December 25, 1848, she married Warren C. Gilbert at Plum Creek (near Prairie duChein), Crawford County, Wisconsin. Not long after their marriage, the Gilberts followed Helen's brother, William Burlock on his move west into Minnesota Territory. They soon settled in Freeborn County, Minnesota where they remained and had a large family.

Her husband, Warren C. Gilbert, died on September 24, 1875 at Hayward in Freeborn County. Helen later died on December 9, 1901 at Albert Lea and both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Glenville, Freeborn County, Minnesota.
