PNEUMONIA FATAL TO LONGTIME CARTHAGE RESIDENT
End Comes One Week After Passing of Her Brother, W. S. Havens - Was 75
Mrs. Laura Ogden, 75, widow of J. Ed Ogden, died at 6 o'clock this morning at her home, 501 West Mound street, a week after the death of her brother, W. Sherman Havens.
Mrs. Ogden, who helped care for her brother during his illness, became ill last Saturday, the day of his death. She contracted pneumonia which caused her death. She long had been in failing health.
She was born September 14, 1863 in Scottsville, Howell county, Missouri. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Havens, came to Carthage in 1882 and she had lived here virtually ever since that time. She was married September 13, 1888 in Seneca, where the family lived at that time, to James Ed Ogden, and they came here to make their home.
Mr. Ogden was the county truant officer at the time of his death, December 19, 1931. He was a prominent evangelistic singer and at one time was director of the Baptist church choir here. For a number of years he was a member of the male quartet of the First Baptist church, and was called upon to sing at hundreds of funeral services over the district.
Mrs. Ogden was a member of the First Baptist church and took an active part in the various organizations until her health failed several years ago. She was a member of the Keystone Bible class of the Sunday school.
Surviving Mrs. Ogden are a son, William Ed Ogden of Carthage; two sisters, Mrs. A. M. Stewart of Van Nuys, California and Mrs. Willamette Mitchell of Seneca and two grandchildren; Marjorie Ogden and Robert Ogden of Carthage, Miss Marjorie Ogden is employed in the office of the Gas Service Company here.
A nephew, Leonard Ogden, passed away last November 5th. Both W. S. Havens and Leonard Ogden were employees of the Carthage Press at the time of their deaths.
The body of Mrs. Ogden was removed to the Knell Mortuary. Funeral arrangements have not been made. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
