William "Bill" Achterhof, 95, went to be with his Lord Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the Artesia Christian Home in Artesia, California.

William was born February 28, 1913 in Chicago, Illinois, the eldest son of Andrew Achterhof and Gertrude (Stob) Achterhof. Bill married Jennie Biel, daughter of Klaas Biel Sr. and Annie TerHaar on July 2, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois.

He attended the schools of Chicago graduating June 30, 1927 from Englewood Christian School, W. 72nd and Peoria Street, Chicago, Illinois, then took night courses at Englewood Evening School, graduating June 8, 1942.

Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife Jennie (Biel) Achterhof on June 9, 2006. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law and two daughters and sons-in-law; Glen William (Mary Elizabeth) Achterhof, Marcia Lou and John Marvin Bandsma and Doris Joy and James Howard Simmons. He was the beloved Grandfather of 10, Great-Grandfather of 11 and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother Henry Achterhof of Indiana and two sisters; Henrietta (Bernard) Drenth of Orland Park, Illinois and Gertrude Engstrom of Worth, Illinois and one brother-in-law Raymond P. Biel of Seal Beach, California.

Bill's first job was working for Armour and Co. in Chicago about 1926 at the age of 13. He later was transferred with Armour and Co. to California in 1948 with his family. He was later offered a job with Bill Van Dyke and Bernie Romberg at Artesia Hay Company in Artesia. Eventually he and "Frenchie" Ressegye became partners in 1960 of Artesia Hay Company and he remained partners until he retired in about 1970.

He was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church of Paramount since 1947, serving as Deacon and Elder. While Elder of the church he was honored to escort Queen Juliana of The Netherlands into church during her visit to America. He served on the Board of Directors of Artesia Christian Home.

He will be missed by all who loved him and whose lives he touched in his 95 years. But we must be happy for he is with the love of his life Jennie and his Beloved Lord.

Family welcomes visitors Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Forest Lawn, Cypress. Funeral will be graveside, Friday, May 23, 2008 at 9 a.m. at Forest Lawn, Cypress with Rev. Pastor Harold Korver of Emmanuel Reformed Church of Paramount conducting the service.
