Joe was the son of Joseph A. & Cora Neeley Cheatham. He was born in Boyle County and raised in Lancaster and Harrodsburg. During World War II, he joined the U.S.N. and had advanced to the rank of Coxswain. He was killed in action in the Pacific Ocean Theater.
The original interment was at the Guam National Cemetery in the Marianas Islands. After the end of the war, his family contacted the government and asked that his remains be disinterred and brought home to Kentucky. That permission was granted, by the Veterans Administration, and he was re-interred at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, on April 28, 1948, with full military honors.
