On July 2, 1870, Frederica was swimming/bathing in the waters of Kingston Lake under the watchful eye of a servant when she got into trouble in the water. The servant jumped in to rescue her and hearing the screams her older sister Cora also jumped into the water to help save her but unforunately Frederica, Cora and the servant all drowned.
The grieving parents buried their daughters in Kingston Presbyterian Church Cemetery, a short distance down the lake from their home.
