In Memoriam

Mary Brookman Beaty

Mrs. Mary Brookman Beaty died at her home in Conway, S. C. Nov. 22nd 1901. She was born in Bucksport, Maine, April 5th 1825; and at the time of her death was 76 years, 7 months, and 17 days old.

Mrs. Beaty came to this county in 1849 and taught school for two terms at Bucksville, S.C. She returned to Main in July 1851, and in September of that same year, she was married to Thomas W. Beaty a native of Horry County. Returning south they made their home in Conway.

Five children were born to them, all of whom died young. She survived her husband and all of her children, dying with few of her kindred near. An only brother, Mr. John U. Brookman, of New York is the only living member of a large member.

Mrs. Beaty was a woman with more than an ordinary mind. She was always well informed on current events, and was thoroughly conversant with the leading questions, pertaining to her adopted State, and also affairs of material importance.

She united with the Kingston Presbyterian Church of Conway when the church was organized in 1858 and she remained a useful member up to the time of death. Her funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. E. Robertson, assisted by Mr. Elkins of the Methodist Church, and her remains buried in the burying ground of the Presbyterian Church.
