Illness Prevents Elaborate Party
Due to the illness of Joseph H. Lessig, who has been confined to his bed the past few weeks, only a small gathering of the immediate family was held yesterday at the Lessig home, 111 Ridgeway St., East Stroudsburg, when he and his wife celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Lessig is the former Mary E. Custard, of Tannersville, and their marriage was solemnized there on January 20, 1886, by the Rev. J. H. Illick.

The Lessigs have resided in East Stroudsburg for the past 16 years, and have taken a prominent part in the affairs of the community all of that time.

Mr. Lessig is a native of Sand Hill, son of Anna Maria and George Lessig. Mrs. Lessig is the daughter of Philip and Sarah Storm Custard.

Through the years, the 60-year bridegroom has held many county offices, and, at the time of his marriage, was constable for the Pocono Township area. He later entered the tin and plumbing business, continuing for a great many years. Both he and his wife were active in numerous orders and organizations, Mrs. Lessig being a charter member of the General Hospital Auxiliary and the Monroe Garden Club.

The Lessigs have two children, Fred, of Newark, N.J., and Mrs. Bessie Small, of East Stroudsburg. Also six grandchildren: Mrs. Paul Grannacher, of Westwood, N.J.; Mrs. Lynn Vail, East Stroudsburg; Benjamin Small Jr., of Staten Island, and First Lt. Joseph Small, now at Camp Robinson, Arkansas; Richard Lessig and Dorothy Lessig Riley, of Philadelphia, and four great-grandchildren. A seventh grandchild, Joseph Lessig, who was serving in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in England, died last April.

At yesterday's family dinner, the table was centered with a beautiful bowl of camellias, sent to Mrs. Lessig from Mr. and Mrs. Wood, of Kisco, N.Y. Decorations were in pink and white, and a beautiful large cake, the gift of Mrs. Small, was marked with the anniversary numerals. The house was filled with floral bouquets, tributes from the many friends of the popular couple.

One month later after their 60th wedding anniversary, Joseph died at the General Hospital of Monroe County and was buried in the mausoleum at Stroudsburg Cemetery.
