1817: The State of Ohio, Preble County. I do testify that on the 10 day of June, I joined in the holy bands of matrimony, Joseph James and Susanah Harlys of lawful age given under my hand and seal this 10 June 1817. Jesse Swisher, J.P.

After their marriage in Preble Co, OH, they moved to Monroe Co, IN; Carroll Co, IN; White Co, IN; Greene Co, IN, where they were early pioneers in each location. Finally, moving on with many of the James family to Ozark Co, MO about 1845.

APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY AND USES OF LAND REFLECTED AT ALTHEA SPRING
The first family to own land here were Joseph James, his wife Susan, and their eight children, James, Sarah, Mary, Lydia, Sarilda, Elizabeth, Lucinda, and Matilda. According to the 1850 census, Joseph and Susan James were born in Tennessee, their children in Indiana and the value of the land was $500.00. James was 52 and his wife 48 when they were granted a patent to the land by President Millard Fillmore in December, 1850.
