Frieda E. Stempges, 87, Pipestone, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Pipestone County Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 16 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Pipestone, with Rev. Jon Olson officiating.

Casket bearers were Richard Dirks, Thomas Skime, Robert Wagner, Eugene Dirks, Eric Skime, Daniel Ryan Wagner and Richard Stempges.

Interment was in Memorial Hill Cemetery, Lake Benton.

Frieda Emma (Dirks) Stempges was born on Aug. 26, 1919 to Dirk and Johanna (Dirks) Dirks near Cazenovia. She was eight of 12 siblings. She was baptized on Oct. 23, 1919 and confirmed as an adult on June 8, 1941 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She attended school in Cazenovia and Pipestone County District 3 before graduating from Verdi High School in 1939.

She worked at various places in Pipestone including Armour Creameries, Montgomery Ward, and J.C. Penney's store. She married Roland Stempges on April 2, 1944 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, they farmed northwest of Lake Benton and east of Verdi before renting a farm near Tyler, where Frieda became employed as a nurse's aide at Vulheim Hospital and Nursing Home. In 1964, they purchased their farm in Verdi Township where she continued working at Vulheim Hospital and Nursing Home, receiving her State Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972, and retiring in 1983.

On Feb. 9, 2004, Roland preceded her in death. After his death, she resided at Storybrook Apartments in Pipestone.

On April 10, 2007 she was admitted to the Pipestone County Medical Center.

She was a former member of Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler where she was active for many years in their education program. She later joined Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton while living near Verdi and upon her move to Pipestone became a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her two sisters-in-law, Carol Dirks, Pipestone and Alice Stempges, Sioux Falls, S.D.; 17 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Roland; her five brothers, John, Harvey, Edward, Ernest and Richard and her six sisters, Alma Ross, Ida Hemerick, Christine Scheerhoorn, Theresa Dirks, Grace DeVriend and Laura O'Neal.
