Roland E. Stempges, 91, Pipestone, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone.

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 13 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Pipestone with Rev. Thomas Mickelson officiating.

Pallbearers were Richard Dirks, Doug Bones, Robert Trigg, Eugene Dirks, David Johnson and Walter Henningsen.

Interment was in Memorial Hill Cemetery in Lake Benton.

Roland Edwin Stempges was born to August and Dorthea (Brockmueller) Stempges on Dec. 10, 1912 in Irene, S.D. on the family farm. He was baptized in the Methodist Church in Irene. At a young age, he moved with his parents to Scotland, S.D. where he grew up and attended school. In 1928, he moved with his parents to a farm northeast of Lake Benton where he attended Lake Benton High School. Upon completion of his education, Roland helped on the family farm.

He married Frieda Dirks on April 2, 1944 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. After they were married, they farmed northwest of Lake Benton for one year and then east of Verdi for three years. They rented a farm near Tyler for 18 years. During this time, Roland was confirmed at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler. In 1964, they purchased their farm in Verdi Township. They continued farming until Roland's retirement in 1983. After his retirement, they continued to reside on the farm. They were avid travelers, visiting throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. He became a resident of Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone on Oct. 1, 2001.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lake Benton where he had served several years as a deacon. When they moved to Pipestone, he transferred membership to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frieda; five godchildren, Walter D. Monk, III, Arlington, Texas; Karen Tadesse Einck, Pipestone; Michael Abraham, Scribner, Neb.; Richard Stempges, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Robert Martin, Tucson, Ariz.; four sisters-in-law, Grace (Henry) DeVriend, Pipestone; Laura O'Neal, Chicago, Ill.; Carol Dirks, Pipestone and Alice Stempges, Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Alwin and Elmer; two sisters, Lillian Cannon and an infant sister and Bernie Skime, a nephew-in-law whom he loved as a son.
