John R Nichols married Mary Elizabeth Morgan on Dec. 2, 1880 and they had nine children, two of whom died in infancy. John was elected to become the Marion County Treasurer in 1914.

John R Nichols, died March 1, at his home in Salem, IL, of typhoid fever after an ill of about five weeks. This information was contained in a letter received by Mrs. G M Nichols this week. The deceased was in Moorcroft in January to attend the funeral of his son Monroe Nichols. Shortly after his return home he was stricken with the disease which caused his death. The deceased was the father of Eli Nichols, who is now hovering between life and death here in Moorcroft with the same disease. A daughter, Mrs. Frances Neilson, is also reported to be dangerously ill with the typhoid in Salem.
John R Nichols was county treasurer of his home county at the time of his death.
