Mrs. Matthews Rites in Gough
Mrs. Richard H. Matthews, 82, of Gough, died Saturday, Dec. 19 in Leisure Home, an Augusta nursing home, following a long illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Gough Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Steering, the Rev. E.L. Baskin, and the Rev. H. Grady Ward officiating. Burial followed at 3:30 p.m. in Brownwood Cemetery in Sandersville.
A native of Washington County, she was before her marriage, Mary Harris, a daughter of the late Richard Ivey Harris and Mrs. Harris who was formerly Miss Roberta Catherine Martin both of Washington County.
She was a member of the Gough Baptist Church, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Gov. Jared Irwin Chapter, and a charter member of the Transylvania Club of Sandersville.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Pierce Starr, Mary Catherine, of New Orleans, La., son, Richard H. Matthews, of Hephzibah; a sister, Mrs. T.C. Holmes, Katie, of Marietta.
Pallbearers were Charles H. Kitchens, Buford Walden, Jack Carswell, Ronald Land, T.M. McClellan, Metts McNair, W.C. Butler and Farris Wren.
DeLoach Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and Mayo Funeral Home of Sandersville were in charge.
Many friends came from Gough and the surrounding area to join the Washington County friends and relatives for the burial here.
