In his youth, he was a song leader at Tabernacle Baptit Church in Houston, Texas. At tent revivals, he was called "The Youngest Song Leader in Houston" - John Porter Taliafer, Radio Star, Pianist, golden Tenor Voice, His Voice is Dedicated to the Lord".
As a student at the University of Houston, he participated in Music and Speech Arts Departments' student productions. In 1949, he played Edvard Grieg in the" Song of Norway", an operetta presented by the The U of H Music and Speech Arts Departments at the Houston Music Hall. He later appeared at a number of productions in Houston before moving to New York.

As a resident of Manhattan, New York City, he appeared in many major Broadway musical. Among his accomplishments were "My Fair Lady," "Mame," "Brigadoon," "Camelot," "Our Town" and "The Student Prince." He also performed in several television productions. His voice was heard on many recordings.
In 1985 he retired from the stage and move to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he worked part-time as a jeweler. He resided in Stroudsburg from 1985 until his death.
