In 1846 Oliver Perry Poulson decided to try his fortunes on the Pacific coast. For a considerable time during the trip Mr. Poulson was in the wagon train commanded by Captain Donner, but luckily he was one of those who, chafing at the slow progress made, decided to increase the speed, and thus he became a member of one of those small parties which branched off from the main train, and crossed the mountains before winter set in, this escaping their share of the terrible experiences of the ill-fated "Donner party", as it is known to history.
