James was Constable Pct.# 1 Athens, Tx. , Henderson Co. On Monday, December 10, 1917, at approximately 12 Noon he and Sheriff W. O. Williams went to a residence to arrest George Davis and search for numerous stolen shotguns, pistols and other items taken in a burglary of a hardware store that had occured several days earlier. Sheriff Williams went to the back of the house and Constable Hopson went to the front. As Constable Hopson entered the house he was shot and killed instantly by Davis. As Davis was attempting to escape he shot Sheriff Williams in the left arm. Davis was able to escape from the scene but was arrested 9 days later in Corsicana, Tx. Davis was sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Constable Hopson was not married and was survived by his Mother and two brothers. He was buried in Black Jack Cemetery where no marker is available to identify his grave. From the file of Terry Baker, retired Deputy, Dallas Co. Sheriff's Dept.: In October, 2005 I completed the research on the case of James W. Hopson. I submitted my research files to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D. C. and the Texas Peace Officers Memorial in Austin, Texas. Constable Hopson was approved and his name placed on both memorials the next year.

The body of Constable Jim Hopson, who was killed yesterday was taken to Black Jack today for burial. The funeral was held at 3 o'clock. Quite a large crowd accompanied the remains to Black Jack.
