Lorin Lyman Smith, 90, of Salinas, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, after a short illness.
Lorin was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Cleveland, Idaho to George and Annie Smith. He grew up in Mink Creek, Idaho and graduated from Thatcher High School in 1937. Because his father died in an accident when Lorin was young, he spent periods with extended family in and near Preston, Idaho, helping with farm work and excelling in mechanical repair. After graduating from high school Lorin moved to Burbank to attend Wiggins Trade School. While there he was honored as a student instructor which led to a job at Vutee Aircraft in Downey. Later he went to work for Lockheed Aircraft.
In 1940 Lorin met Norma Tolman and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Feb. 21, 1941. Lorin worked for a short time before enlisting in the United States Navy. He trained at Farragut Naval Training Station in Idaho and then served during World War II as an aircraft sheet metal parts fabricator. After his enlistment was complete, Lorin moved to Ogden, Utah where he operated a small private school for sheet metal and aircraft fabrication. He returned to Lockheed for a while before working as a sheet metal template maker at Hill Field Air Force Base. He later took courses at Idaho State Teachers College at Abion, Idaho and San Francisco State College in California.
After the death in 1955 of his wife, Norma, Lorin met and married Berniele Kenison Gagon. He was a widower with six children and she a widow with two children. After their marriage on Dec. 14, 1957 they lived in Tracy, where another son was born.
Lorin had a long and varied background in teaching, having taught high school in Idaho and Nevada, and elementary school, vocational training, and college classes in Wyoming and California. He loved working with young people and for many years coached and umpired in Little League programs.
In 1966 Lorin and his family moved to Salinas where he held a position with Hartnell College. He later worked with vocational programs at Monterey Peninsula College and Gavilan College, retiring from teaching in 1983. After retirement, Lorin served on the Alisal Union School District Board of Education for eight years, including several years as president. Since the death of his wife, Berniele, in 2008, he had kept busy and active with family and friends.
He was a long time member of the Salinas 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he served for many years as a teacher and leader. During the course of raising his family he managed a career in education while volunteering in a host of family oriented activities. He was always there with calm and quiet support whenever he was needed. He will be remembered by family, friends and hundreds of students as a loving and gentle hearted leader and teacher.
