A Confederate Soldier. He was wounded somewhere in Mississippi and held in a Confederate prison camp for a short time. He was not heard from for three years and the family thought he was dead. When he returned home, his wife, Lavina Love Smith had married Littleton Crankfield Shinn and had a baby girl. John and Lavina got a divorce and she quickly remarried Littleton. John then married Tempy Harrison Coggins.

"Uncle" John Smith, an old settler of the county residing at Mill Creek, died at the home of his son, J.D. Smith of East Point church vicinity, Sunday, March 17th. Interment took place at East Point cemetery the following day. "Uncle John" was a native of North Carolina. He had been thrice married, his third wife dying last fall. For some months past he had been ill and is survived by only one son, mentioned above.
