Balbina Hechinger was born in Oberthal, Baden, Germany to Nikolaus Hechinger and Theresa Wessbecher. She married Gregor Liebmann son of Gottfried Liebamnn and Juliana/Johanna Seiter on 05 March 1846 in Buhlertal, Baden, Germnay. Her father Nikolaus, a master-tailor, died 28 October 1851. At the time of his death the communities of the Black Forest area were suffering from economic hardship due to crop failures. By 1854, conditions were worsening with the communities and churches overwhelmed with the needs of the people. A decree was issued by the grand duchy government which gave permission and money to communities to begin a forced emigration of paupers to the Unites States. Fifty-seven families were chosen from the community of Buhlertal and in January of 1855, they were given new clothing and provided with old coffee sacks for their suitcases. On the morning of 11 January, 1855 they were assembled in from of the parish hall to say their last farewell to family and friends. They were escorted on foot by five gendames to the town of Buhl. From there they traveled to Strasbourg and then on to Le Havre. Balbina's family, her widowed mother, and her siblings were was among these fifty-seven families and they boarded the Desdemona and set sail on 15 January, 1855 for New Orleans. 2 April 1855 finds Balbina and her family arriving in New Orleans. From here they traveled up the Mississippi River to St. Louis.
Found on the ship' s manifest are her mother Theresa and her siblings Karolina,Ignatz,Bunna, Maria Anna, Feliciata,Josephina, and Heinri Hechinger age 3 mo (son of Bunna).
