Obituary:
Miss Bertie Belle Miles, 91 of Blackshear, passed away Monday evening, February 8, 2010, at the Pierce County Nursing Home.

Born in Boston, Georgia on October 17, 1918, Miss Miles had lived most of her life in Pierce County. She had taught school at Newbern Creek School for a few years before moving to Washington, DC to work for the FBI during World War II. Following her time in Washington Miss Miles returned to Pierce County and went to work for Georgia Power as a Home Economist for 45 years where she won many awards. Miss Miles was also in the Georgia Home Economist Association where she received the Silver Circle Award and numerous other awards. Miss Miles was a member of the Blackshear Woman's Club where she had served as past treasurer. She had worked very hard in the club having won many awards including the Outstanding Service Award. Miss Miles was a past president of the Valdosta Chapter of the Business & Professional Women, was a volunteer with the Pierce County Food Pantry and was a graduate of the Community Leadership Pierce County Perspective Class of '87. She was a member of the Blackshear First Baptist Church where she was in the Adult Sunday School Class.

Miss Miles was a daughter of the late George Washington & Ada Mae Branch Miles. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Bowen, Waunelle Strickland and Geraldine Gardner; both of her brothers, Johnny Miles and Earl Miles; and a niece, Kay Lane Miles Perritt.

Survivors include six nephews, Monroe (Dinah) Miles and Sam Miles all of Blackshear, John Dale (Nell) Miles of Blythe Island, John Earl (Shirleen) Strickland of Mershon, and Eric (Annette) Gardner and Warren (Missy) Gardner all of Patterson; 4 nieces, Lisa Miles (Scott) Register of Adell, Debra S. Giddens of Millwood, Diann Strickland of Mershon and Linda Gardner Cordell of St. Simons; 14 great nieces and nephews; 7 great, great nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, J. W. Gardner of Patterson and several other relatives.

Memorials:
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 670 Main Street, Blackshear, GA 31516 or to a charity of one's choosing.

Service:
A memorial service for Miss Miles will be held at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon (February 10, 2010) at the First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cemetery:
Memorialization will be by cremation.
