Waunelle Miles Strickland

Mrs. Waunelle Miles Strickland, 92, of Mershon, passed away Sunday evening (November 9, 2008) at her residence following a long illness.

Born in Thomas County, GA, she had lived in Pierce County for most of her adult life. Mrs. Strickland graduated from Blackshear High School and the University of Georgia where she received her teaching degree. She went on to teach at the Patterson High School and was a member of the Pierce County Retired Teachers and the Georgia Retired Teachers Associations. Mrs. Strickland was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Mershon Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school, worked with the children's choir and played the piano and organ for many years.

Mrs. Strickland and her late husband, Mr. John Earl "J. E." Strickland, were Polled Hereford breeders having done so since 1948. She was instrumental in the founding of the Georgia Poll-Ette Organization in 1973 and was still a charter member at the time of her death. In 1995 the Georgia Poll-Ettes honored Mrs. Strickland with a life-time membership. In 1997 the Georgia Poll-Ette Scholarship was renamed the Waunell Strickland Scholarship and in 1999 she was named the Poll-Ette of the Year by the National Organization of Poll-Ettes.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Strickland was also preceded in death by her parents, George Washington & Ada Mae Branch Miles; two sisters, Lucille Miles Bowen and Geraldine Miles Gardner; and both of her brothers, Earl Miles and Johnny Miles.

Mrs. Strickland is survived by two daughters, Debra Giddens of Millwood and Diann Strickland of Mershon; a son and daughter-in-law, John Earl & Shirleen Strickland, II of Blackshear; a sister, Miss Bertie Miles of Blackshear; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Florrice S. Deen of Mershon; 6 grandchildren, John & Michele Strickland, III, Nancy & Duward Boatright, Jr., Betsy & Lance Davis, Jennifer Giddens, Greg & Crystal Giddens and Jake Giddens; 6 great grandchildren, Molly Strickland, Brooke Gillis, Duward Boatright, III, Ruthie Jaye Boatright, Marah Giddens and Ben Giddens and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Strickland will be held Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock from the Mershon Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the Blackshear Cemetery.

Visitation for Mrs. Strickland will be held Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Strickland will lay in state at the church one hour prior to the service.
