The family name in Norway was "Eriksen". Esther's father emigrated to America in 1906, working for a year before his wife and children were able to join him in South Dakota. When Esther's father came to America he changed the family surname to "Hammer", which was the new surname his elder brother, Ludvig, had assumed when he had emigrated to America.
Though she was very young, Esther remembered the voyage across the ocean on the C.F. Tietgen and seeing the Statue of Liberty as they arrived in America on October 9, 1908.
Esther married Lincoln Easterby on November 3, 1919, in Perkins Co., South Dakota. They raised six children together -- living in Day, Perkins, and Brown Counties of South Dakota.
In 1957 Lincoln and Esther moved to Puyallup, Washington, where they lived for many years. After Lincoln's retirement from the Boeing Company they enjoyed life and did some traveling. They eventually moved back to Frederick, South Dakota in 1980. Lincoln passed away in October 1981. Esther continued living in her home in Frederick, traveling to visit her children quite often for extended periods of time. Her last residence was Bethesda Home in Aberdeen.
