John's obituary said that he was the first White child born in Kern County after it was formed from Los Angeles and Tulare counties in May 1866. It has since been learned that another male, Nicholas James Williams, was born in Havilah on 25 May 1866, making Nicholas the first White child born in Kern County and John the second.
He died at his mountain home in Alta Sierra, Kern County, California near Greenhorn Summit.
