John was born June 5, 1922, in West Jersey, Ill., the son of John Hardy and Ethel Ann Buskirk Porter. He married Norma Abbott on Nov. 28, 1942, in Wayland, Mo. She survives.
Surviving are his son, John (Jean) Porter Jr. of Wyoming; two grandsons, Rusty Porter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Andrew (Jennifer) Porter of Wyoming; and four great-grandchildren, Blaze, Willow, Daegan and Raiden Porter.
One brother, James Porter, and one sister, Doris Davis, preceded him in death.
John retired in 1986 from the Illinois Department of Transportation. He also worked at the former Bob's Service Station in Wyoming for many years and was deputy sheriff and city marshal for the city of Wyoming.
He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European and African theater. He was awarded four Bronze Battle Stars and a Purple Heart after being wounded in action in France and Germany.
He was a member of the Wyoming American Legion Post 91 and enjoyed playing horseshoes.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment of cremains will be in Wyoming Cemetery at a later date.
