Born in Minneapolis, MN, John W. Jakway grew up in Buchanan Co., IA, graduating from the Aurora H.S. in 1940. John Jakway served in the US Navy in WWII on an aircraft carrier in the North Atlantic and also in the Eastern Pacific. He graduated the MN School of Business and Hamline University. He went on to a Masters in Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, NJ. He then served as a Methodist minister for 41 years in various Minnesota communities. After retirement he worked as a limo driver for 18 more years. He had a commercial pilot's licence and also drove touring motorcycles. He had a 60 year marriage to Margaret Stave. They had two sons, one dying in infancy, the other giving John Walter Jakway two grandchildren. John Walter Jakway II died in 2003 at age 86.
