Walter was the last of the four children born to Henry and Julia (Reed) Gould. On August 24, 1898, he married Maude A. Smith, in St. Louis, Michigan. They had three children; a baby boy that died at 6 days old, Lawrence, and Esther. Maude passed away in 1912 from cancer.
Walter later married Blanche Dorothy McNaughton in 1915. They had four sons together; Robert, Donald, Gordon, and Max. After Walter's death in 1956, his family moved to California where they lived until their deaths.
