Socorro Benitez, age 66, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on Friday, Jan. 8.
She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. In her younger days, Socorro enjoyed her role of mother to eight children, often joining in the occasional game of basketball.
As her children became older, she became a friend and confident, always giving her attention to your every sorrow, every joy and maybe even just getting the "Mom look" when you had made a mistake in judgment.
Always showing everyone the same love, support and compassion, whether it was a family member or dear friend, to her, everyone she loved was family.
Socorro enjoyed dancing, casino, bingo and going for drives, nowhere in particular just going for drives. She loved the sound of laughter coming from her children and grandchildren. Family gatherings and parties were something she would always attend, even if it was just for a while.
Socorro never met a stranger — everyone was a friend. She made many friends at the dialysis center in Los Lunas, whom she loved as family. Her family will always consider her an angel, guiding their way through life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Santiago, in 2005, and Evangelina Silva in 2001, and her nieces, Cristina Grace Dixon in 2004, and Neria Alvarado in 1997. Socorro is survived by her children, Isaac Benitez and wife, Cynthia of Albuquerque, Bertha Calderon and husband, Sergio of Los Lunas, Isachar Benitez and wife, Andrea of Los Lunas, Isaias Benitez and wife, Linda of Albuquerque, Eliseo Benitez and wife, Bonnie of Wisconsin, Isai Benitez of Texas, Israel Benitez of Los Lunas and Melinda Ketchum and husband, Deon of Los Lunas; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and counting.
