"MR. AND MRS. HENRY J. SHAFER, Henry J. Shafer died at his home near Mineral Springs, Dec. 14th, of grip, aged 78 years. Maria Weaver, his wife, died Dec. 13th, of the same disease, aged 76 years. The double funeral services were held at Shafer residence Monday, Rev. West, of the M.E. church, officiating. The remains were deposited in the Cobleskill Cemetery. John H. Shafer and Mrs. Albert M. Eckerson are the surviving children. Mr. Shafer always followed the peaceful pursuits of farming. So quiet manner was he that no disturbing outside influence ever molested the even tenor of his ways. His interests were in his family, to whom he was ever indulgent, and in his farming which he made exceptionally successful. Under his guiding hand the soil yielded abundantly; by fostering care the stock was [not legible] and contented. Within his own sphere, by legitimate means, without in any way at any time relinquishing the rights, real or pretended, of others, he accumulated, by strictly legitimate means, an ample fortune. So plain and direct was he, and with all so honest, even a dispute with neighbors was an impossibility. He was kind- hearted. His death is regretted. Mrs. Shafer was an earnest help-mate to her husband. She shared his labors and smoothed the pathway for both to travel. In life they labored together and in death they were not long separated." Note: the surviving children were son John H. Shaffer and daughter Nancy C. Eckerson, wife of Peter Augustus Eckerson.
