In the spring of 1872 he moved his family to Kansas and homesteaded in Lone Tree Township, after a few years he moved to King City Township, where he lived until 1898 when the family moved to McPherson where he lived until the last three years which he spent with his children in Moundridge. His wife departed this life 31 May 1909. He had lived in complete darkness the last four years of his life, having lost his eyesight. He was a man of patience, never wanting to cause anyone an inconvenience. For the past eight weeks he was not as well as usual and departed this live the afternoon of 7 March. All that loving hands could do was done for his comfort. Besides his children and sister there are 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; nieces and a host of friends to mourn his loss, among them his comrades of the James B. McPherson Post of the G.A.R.
