At the age of ninety-seven, Elvin Downs peacefully passed away the evening of January 25, 2010 after spending a wonderful day visiting with his family and friends.
He was born October 23, 1912 in Orem, Utah to William and Florence Judd Downs.
He married Neva Ash on September 18, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple. Neva passed away on March 21, 1985 and he later married Helen Jones. They have enjoyed each other's companionship for the last twenty-four years.
Elvin graduated from Utah State University with degrees in Forest Mgt. and Agricultural Education. After teaching Vocational Ag for four years, he was employed by the State Board of Education and served for thirty-six years as Supervisor of Vocational Ag. In this capacity he served as State Adviser to the Utah Assoc. of Future Farmers of America and the Utah Young Farmers Assoc.
Elvin accompanied thousands of Future Farmers and Young Farmers to national conventions and regional activities. During his years of service he received numerous citations at the local, state, and national levels for his outstanding contributions in the field of Agricultural Ed.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and gave years of effective leadership in the scouting program, the Young Men's program, Priesthood Quorum and in the Sunday School. He served in two different Bishoprics in the Grant Fourth Ward and as a High Councilman for the Grant Stake for nearly nine years. He will be remembered for his great example as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Survived by his wife, Helen, and five children: Carla (Marvin) Francis, West Valley City; Marilyn (Fred) Glauser, Sandy; Jay (Lisbeth) Downs, Midway; Donna (Kevin) Rasmussen, Sandy; Mark (Susan) Downs, Kaysville; twenty-three grandchildren; fifty-one great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by Helen's wonderful family who he grew to love as his own.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 in the American Fork Sixth Ward Building (100 East 300 North, American Fork) at 11:00 a.m. There will be a viewing held two hours prior to the services.
Interment will be in Mountain View Memorial Estates Cemetery (3115 East Bengal Boulevard (7800 South), Cottonwood Heights) immediately following the services.
