John was married first to Emma Catharine Hurdler by Rev. Aston C. Wuchter at Salem Church (Monroe Co. marriage license #1532). After her death, John married Ellen Helen Hudler or Hurtler (Hallteler) in 1905 at Salem Church. The similarity of their surnames suggests that they may have been sisters. John Mackes was a farmer at Little Washington in Monroe County, PA.
In 1900 John Meckes, listed as born Dec. 1866 (actually 1864) age 33, a carpenter, was living in Lower Towamensing Twp., Carbon Co., PA, with his first wife, Emma C. Meckes born Aug. 1872 age 27. The census showed that John and Emma had been married for one year and that Emma was the mother of no children. Also listed in their household was John's unmarried brother, Nathan Meckes born Sept. 1876 (actually 1877) age 23 a day laborer, and a boarder, Francis Bartholomew, born Apr. 1882 age 18, an apprentice carpenter.
