Adam was born at Nierstein (on the west bank of the Rhine just south of Mainz, Hesse-Darmstadt) to Peter Maurer and Maria Katherina Sander. He married Katharina Wolff in February, 1848 and sailed to America that Spring with his new bride, his parents, his younger brothers and sisters, and his wife's brother and wife. Tragically, Katharina died at sea, and Adam married Eva Maria Schwartz on March 5, 1850 after settling in Rhine Township, Wisconsin. Adam was a grain farmer and gristmill operator at Johnsonville, on the site of today's smoked sausage plant. He was involved in a number of business ventures with his brothers-in-law Michael and William Schwartz of Plymouth.
He and Eva had nine children between 1851 and 1862. Adam died in 1874 after he let very cold water shower over him at the milldam on a hot August day, according to the local newspaper.

Three of Adam and Eva's children Peter (1854), Maria (1857), and Augusta (1860) died soon after childbirth and were presumably buried in the same plot.
